Introduction
Annealed TP405 Ferritic Stainless Tube solves a problem that its close relative TP410 has: air hardening. A 12% chromium steel can partly transform to brittle martensite when it cools from welding or hot forming, and that hard zone can crack. TP405 avoids this by adding 0.10-0.30% aluminum, which is a strong ferrite former and keeps the structure ferritic at all temperatures. As a result the tube can be welded and cooled in air without hardening, and the heat-affected zone remains reasonably ductile with no preheat or special post-weld treatment in most cases.
Composition is 11.5-14.5% chromium with carbon up to 0.08%. Minimum properties in the annealed condition are 415 MPa tensile, 170 MPa yield and 20% elongation, so it is softer than TP410 and cannot be strengthened by heat treatment. The tube is supplied fully annealed at about 760-830°C and air cooled to give a uniform, soft, formable structure. Grain growth in the weld zone is the remaining limit, so heavy-section welds can show reduced toughness, and the grade should be avoided for prolonged exposure around 475°C where ferritic steels embrittle.
Typical applications are shell-and-tube feedwater heaters and condensers, petroleum refinery heat exchangers and process vessel linings or internals, fossil plant ducts, and steam-side equipment where resistance to scaling and general corrosion is needed at a lower cost than austenitic tube. It resists oxidation to about 700°C in air and handles steam and many hydrocarbon streams, but it is not suited to chloride pitting environments or strong acids. Compared with TP430, it has lower chromium but better weld behavior; compared with TP409, it does not need titanium stabilization.
