ASTM A268 TP410 Seamless Stainless Tube

Martensitic 12Cr | UNS S41000 | Hardenable & Magnetic

ASTM A268 | Heat Treatable | Steam & Refinery Grade

Introduction

ASTM A268 TP410 Seamless Stainless Tube belongs to a different metallurgical family from every austenitic and duplex grade in this catalogue. With 11.5-13.5% chromium, no significant nickel and carbon up to 0.15%, TP410 is martensitic: it can be hardened by heating above about 950°C and quenching, then tempered to trade hardness for toughness. That heat-treatability is the reason to choose it. Austenitic tube cannot be hardened this way and duplex tube cannot be tempered without losing corrosion resistance, so TP410 fills the gap where strength and wear resistance matter more than maximum corrosion performance.

In the supplied annealed condition the tube has a minimum tensile strength of 415 MPa and yield strength of 205 MPa with 20% elongation, and it is readily machined and formed. After hardening and tempering the strength can be raised well above 700 MPa, depending on tempering temperature. Corrosion resistance is good in fresh water, steam, mild atmospheres and many organic media, but the low chromium and absence of molybdenum mean it will pit in chlorides and should not replace TP304 or TP316 in wet or marine service. The alloy is also magnetic, which can be an advantage in some sensing and shielding uses.

Typical applications are steam turbine and compressor components, boiler feedwater and superheater accessories operating up to about 600°C in oxidizing steam, refinery heat exchangers handling hydrocarbon streams with low chlorides, and mechanical tube parts such as valve trim, shafts and bushings. Welding requires preheating around 200-300°C and post-weld tempering to avoid hard, brittle heat-affected zones, and hydrogen cracking must be managed. Tempering between roughly 400°C and 580°C should be avoided because temper embrittlement lowers impact toughness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TP410 the same as standard stainless steel?
It is a stainless grade, but martensitic rather than austenitic, so it is hardenable, magnetic and less corrosion resistant.
What strength can be reached after heat treatment?
Depending on tempering, well above 700 MPa.
Can it be used in seawater?
No, chloride pitting resistance is poor.
Is it magnetic?
Yes.
How is it welded?
With preheat and post-weld tempering to reduce hardness and cracking risk.
What is the steam temperature limit?
About 600°C in oxidizing steam service.
