TP321 Titanium Stabilized Austenitic Pipe

Titanium Stabilized | UNS S32100 | Intergranular Corrosion Resistant

ASME SA312 | Aerospace & Refinery Grade

Introduction

TP321 Titanium Stabilized Austenitic Pipe solves a problem that standard 304-type stainless cannot: sensitization during prolonged exposure to the 450°C-900°C range, where chromium carbides precipitate at grain boundaries and leave the material vulnerable to intergranular corrosion. TP321 addresses this by adding titanium at a minimum of five times the carbon content, so titanium — not chromium — combines preferentially with carbon to form stable titanium carbides during manufacturing and welding. Chromium therefore stays in solid solution near the grain boundaries, preserving the passive oxide layer that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance even after the material has spent extended time in the sensitizing temperature range.

This stabilization makes TP321 the practical choice wherever post-weld heat treatment is impractical or impossible — such as field-welded expansion joints, aircraft and marine exhaust components, and process piping that will see repeated thermal cycling through the sensitizing range during normal operation. The titanium addition also improves creep strength modestly compared to unstabilized grades at temperatures up to roughly 800°C, and the pipe carries good resistance to polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking, a failure mode that specifically targets sensitized stainless in sulfur-bearing refinery environments during shutdown and startup.

TP321 pipe is manufactured seamless, hot worked and solution annealed, then supplied with full chemical certification confirming the titanium-to-carbon ratio meets the minimum 5xC requirement — a detail worth verifying on mill certificates, since under-stabilized material loses the corrosion benefit that defines the grade. Typical applications span aircraft collector rings and exhaust manifolds, refinery furnace tube supports and expansion bellows, and high-temperature ducting where repeated thermal cycling would otherwise sensitize an unstabilized grade over the service life of the equipment.

Usage Tips

Verify Stabilization

Always check the mill certificate for the titanium-to-carbon ratio; under-stabilized heats lose the intergranular corrosion benefit.

Field Welding

TP321 is well suited to field welds without subsequent heat treatment, but matching filler metal (321 or 347 type) should still be used.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is titanium added to TP321?
Titanium combines with carbon preferentially, preventing chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding or prolonged exposure between 450°C and 900°C.
Does TP321 need post-weld heat treatment?
Generally no — the stabilization is designed specifically to avoid the need for PWHT in most service conditions.
What is polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking?
It is a cracking mechanism that attacks sensitized stainless steel exposed to sulfur compounds and moisture, typically during refinery shutdown; TP321's stabilization provides meaningful resistance.
How does TP321 compare to TP347?
Both are stabilized grades; TP321 uses titanium while TP347 uses niobium, which generally gives slightly better high-temperature creep strength at the upper end of the service range.
What is the maximum recommended service temperature?
TP321 performs well up to approximately 800°C for continuous service, beyond which TP347 or a nickel alloy may be preferred.
Can TP321 be used for aircraft exhaust systems?
Yes, it is a long-established choice for exhaust collector rings and manifolds where thermal cycling and weldability are both critical.
