TP410 Martensitic Stainless Steel Tubing

ASTM A213 / A268 | UNS S41000 | Hardenable 12% Chromium Martensitic Grade

ISO 9001 | PED | TS Certified

Introduction

As the foundational grade of the martensitic stainless steel family, TP410 Martensitic Stainless Steel Tubing occupies a unique position in the materials engineering landscape — delivering a combination of moderate corrosion resistance, high hardness, excellent wear resistance, and strong mechanical strength that no austenitic or ferritic grade can replicate. Designated under ASTM A213 and manufactured to ASTM A268 and EN 10216-5 standards, TP410 is a straight chromium grade containing 11.5–13.5% chromium with a carefully controlled carbon content that, upon hardening heat treatment, transforms the austenitic microstructure into a hard, fine-grained martensite phase. This martensitic transformation is the source of TP410's defining mechanical characteristic: the ability to achieve tensile strengths exceeding 900 MPa and hardness values above 200 HBW through heat treatment — properties that are fundamentally unattainable in austenitic or ferritic stainless grades at comparable cost. This hardening capability makes TP410 tubing the material of choice for applications requiring wear resistance, erosion resistance, and high mechanical strength in moderately corrosive environments, particularly where the elevated alloy cost of duplex or nickel-based alternatives cannot be justified by the operating conditions.

The corrosion resistance of TP410 martensitic tubing, while more limited than that of austenitic or duplex grades, is entirely adequate for a broad range of industrial applications involving mildly corrosive media, atmospheric exposure, fresh water, steam, and dilute organic acids. The 12% chromium content is sufficient to form a stable passive oxide film on the tube surface, providing reliable protection against oxidation, general atmospheric corrosion, and mild aqueous corrosion in non-chloride environments. This corrosion resistance is optimized in the hardened and tempered condition, where the microstructure is fully martensitic and the chromium is uniformly distributed throughout the matrix without the chromium depletion at grain boundaries that can occur in improperly heat-treated material. For applications involving slightly more aggressive environments, the annealed condition offers improved corrosion resistance at the expense of some mechanical strength, providing flexibility in balancing the mechanical and corrosion performance requirements of specific tubing applications. The inherent magnetic permeability of the martensitic structure also makes TP410 tubing suitable for applications requiring magnetic response, distinguishing it from the non-magnetic austenitic grades that are unable to meet this requirement.

The heat treatment flexibility of TP410 martensitic tubing is one of its most commercially valuable attributes. By varying the austenitizing temperature, quench rate, and tempering temperature within the material's established heat treatment parameters, manufacturers can tailor the mechanical properties of finished tubing across a wide performance spectrum — from a softened, machinable annealed condition suitable for complex fabrication operations to a fully hardened and tempered condition optimized for maximum wear resistance and mechanical strength. This versatility makes TP410 an exceptionally adaptable material that can be customized to meet the specific performance requirements of diverse end-use applications without changing the base alloy specification. In valve trim applications, turbine blade tubing, and pump shaft sleeves, the hardened TP410 condition provides the erosion and wear resistance required for reliable long-term performance in abrasive flow environments. In heat exchanger and condenser tubing applications for mildly corrosive cooling water service, the annealed condition provides the forming and joining characteristics required for complex tube-to-tubesheet assembly operations.

Our TP410 martensitic stainless steel tubing program covers the complete range of dimensions required for industrial process, power generation, and mechanical engineering applications, from precision small-bore tubing in outer diameters from 6mm to large industrial pipe sizes up to 610mm, with wall thicknesses from 0.5mm to 20mm. All tubing is manufactured in compliance with ASTM A213, ASTM A268, and EN 10216-5, with heat treatment performed and verified to ensure the specified mechanical properties are consistently achieved throughout each production lot. Comprehensive EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Reports documenting chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment records, and dimensional inspection results are provided with every shipment. Whether you require TP410 in the annealed condition for fabrication flexibility or in the hardened and tempered condition for maximum mechanical performance, our production capability and technical expertise ensure that every tube delivered meets your precise application requirements with documented quality assurance and complete material traceability.

Product Usage Tips

Welding Recommendations

Preheat to 200–300°C before welding to prevent cold cracking. Use ER410 matching filler or austenitic ER309L for dissimilar joints. Post-weld heat treatment at 650–750°C is recommended to restore toughness and reduce hardness in the heat-affected zone.

Machining & Fabrication

Machine in the annealed condition for best results. Use sharp carbide tooling with adequate coolant. For hardened conditions, use CBN or ceramic tooling. Avoid work hardening by maintaining consistent cutting parameters throughout machining operations.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Passivate with nitric acid solution after machining or welding to restore the passive film. Avoid prolonged exposure to chloride-containing environments, which can initiate pitting on the relatively low-chromium martensitic surface.

Heat Treatment Guide

Anneal at 815–900°C followed by slow cooling for maximum softness. Harden by austenitizing at 925–1010°C, quenching in oil or air, then tempering at 150–370°C for maximum hardness or 600–750°C for optimum toughness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes TP410 different from austenitic grades like 304 or 316?
TP410 is a hardenable martensitic grade with 12% chromium that can be heat treated to achieve much higher hardness and strength than austenitic grades, making it suitable for wear-resistant mechanical applications, though with lower corrosion resistance than 304 or 316.
Can TP410 tubing be hardened after fabrication?
Yes, TP410 can be austenitized, quenched, and tempered after forming and machining to achieve the required hardness and strength. Preheating before welding and post-weld heat treatment are recommended to manage the hardened heat-affected zone.
Is TP410 suitable for chloride-containing environments?
TP410 has moderate corrosion resistance suitable for mildly corrosive environments. It is not recommended for service in high-chloride or marine environments where duplex or austenitic grades with higher chromium and molybdenum content are required.
What is the maximum hardness achievable with TP410?
In the fully hardened condition, TP410 can achieve hardness values of 250–350 HBW depending on the austenitizing and quenching parameters. Tempering at lower temperatures (150–200°C) maximizes hardness while tempering at 600–750°C provides optimum toughness.
Do you provide MTRs with all TP410 shipments?
Yes, all shipments include EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Reports with full chemical analysis, mechanical test results, heat treatment records, and dimensional inspection data for complete material traceability.
Is TP410 magnetic?
Yes, TP410 in both the annealed and hardened martensitic condition is strongly ferromagnetic, making it suitable for applications requiring magnetic response, such as certain sensor and actuator components.
What is the typical lead time for TP410 tubing?
Standard dimensions are available within 15–25 days. Custom heat treatment conditions or special dimensions typically require 25–40 days depending on production scheduling and heat treatment capacity.
Do you export TP410 tubing internationally?
Yes, we supply TP410 martensitic stainless steel tubing to over 50 countries across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas, with full export documentation and logistics coordination.
