Introduction
Automotive Silencer TP439 Stainless Tube is a workhorse of the exhaust system. It contains 17-19% chromium, up to 0.07% carbon and a titanium stabilizer of at least 0.20 + 4(C+N), up to 1.10%. Titanium locks up carbon and nitrogen as stable carbonitrides, so the tube can be welded without sensitization and keeps its toughness in the heat-affected zone. The absence of nickel, together with a lower cost than austenitic grades, is the reason automakers use ferritic stainless for the cooler sections of exhaust systems.
Exhaust silencers see two attacks: hot oxidation on the engine side and acidic condensate on the cold end. Condensate from combustion contains sulfuric, nitric, formic and carbonic acids at pH levels as low as 3, together with chlorides from winter road salt, which corrode carbon steel and 409-type stainless. TP439 resists this attack better than 409 because of its higher chromium, and it tolerates oxidation up to roughly 850°C scaling temperature. Minimum properties are 415 MPa tensile, 205 MPa yield and 22% elongation, giving good formability for bending, expanding and hydroforming into resonators.
Tube is supplied as seamless or high-frequency welded stock to closely controlled diameter and wall thickness, and can be bright annealed for visible tailpipe applications. Typical parts are silencer shells and inner perforated tubes, muffler end pipes, catalytic converter housings, diesel particulate filter casings and flexible pipe sleeves. Where the hot end reaches above about 850°C, higher-alloy grades such as 441 with niobium or 444 with molybdenum are used, and stainless austenitic grades are chosen for the manifold. Thin walls of 0.8-1.5 mm are typical, so surface quality and weld seam consistency matter.
