Introduction
TP409 Oxidation Resistant Seamless Tubing is the entry-level stabilized ferritic stainless steel and the cheapest way to get a true chromium oxide scale on a tube. With 10.5-11.75% chromium, carbon capped at 0.08% and titanium added at a minimum of six times the carbon content (up to 0.75%), TP409 forms a thin, adherent oxide film that holds the tube together in hot air and combustion gas far longer than plain carbon steel, which scales and flakes away above about 400°C. Titanium also ties up carbon, so the welded joint does not sensitize and the tube stays ductile after fabrication.
The grade is deliberately a compromise. With only 11% chromium it will show surface rust in wet or coastal exposure, and that discoloration is cosmetic rather than structural, which is why it is accepted on the hidden hot side of exhaust systems but not on visible trim. Continuous oxidation resistance is good to roughly 675°C, with intermittent scaling resistance somewhat higher. Minimum mechanical properties are 380 MPa tensile, 205 MPa yield and 20% elongation, and the tube bends, flares and hydroforms well. Thermal expansion is low at about 11.7 µm/m·K, giving better fatigue life under heat cycling than austenitic tube.
Typical uses are exhaust manifolds downstream pipes, catalytic converter and particulate filter housings, heat recovery ducts, burner shrouds, furnace fan parts and commercial kitchen flue sections where temperature is high but moisture and chlorides are limited. For visible, condensate-prone cold-end silencer parts, a higher-chromium stabilized grade such as TP439 is the better choice, and for temperatures above about 700°C, 441 or 444 should be considered. Welding is easy with 409Nb or matching fillers, with low heat input to limit grain growth in the heat-affected zone.
