Introduction
Pitting Resistant TP444 Ferritic Pipe is the high-performance ferritic grade. With 17.5-19.5% chromium, 1.75-2.50% molybdenum and stabilization by titanium and niobium, TP444 reaches a PREN of about 24-26, similar to TP316L, while containing less than 1% nickel. The result is a material that resists pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride waters but is not susceptible to chloride stress corrosion cracking at all, the failure that sends austenitic pipe to the scrap heap in hot chlorinated water.
Stabilization is the second key feature. Carbon and nitrogen are kept extremely low (0.025% and 0.035% maximum) and the remainder is bound as titanium and niobium carbonitrides, so the pipe resists sensitization after welding and does not lose toughness the way plain 430 does. Minimum properties are 415 MPa tensile, 275 MPa yield and 20% elongation, with yield strength about 35% higher than 316L. Thermal conductivity is also about 40% higher and thermal expansion about 30% lower than austenitic grades, improving heat transfer and thermal-cycling durability.
Typical applications include domestic and commercial hot water storage tanks and piping, solar water heating loops, power plant and marine condensers using brackish or chlorinated cooling water, and heat exchanger tube for process water with residual chloride. It is also used for automotive exhaust cold-end components in corrosive road-salt environments. Limits to observe include lower impact toughness at low temperature, a recommendation to keep welded thicknesses moderate, and avoidance of long exposure around 475°C. For seawater with warm, stagnant crevices, duplex or super duplex remain the safer choices.
