Pitting Resistant S2205 Duplex Steel Pipe is chosen when the failure you most fear is a pinhole, not general wall loss. Pitting is a localized attack that starts where the passive film breaks down, most often in chloride solutions, and can perforate a wall long before weight-loss corrosion becomes visible. In 2205 the defence is quantified by the PREN formula, Cr + 3.3Mo + 16N. With 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum and 0.17% nitrogen the result is about 35, comfortably above 316L at roughly 24 and enough to give a critical pitting temperature near 35-40°C in ASTM G48 ferric chloride testing.
This listing focuses on how that number is protected in the finished pipe. Nitrogen is the least visible contributor and the easiest to lose, so heats are melted with argon-oxygen decarburization and checked for nitrogen at the low end of the specification. Solution annealing at 1020-1100°C followed by rapid quenching keeps chromium nitrides and sigma phase out of the structure, since even small amounts of these phases deplete the surrounding matrix and create pit initiation sites. Pickling and passivation then remove the heat tint and embedded iron that would otherwise sit on the surface as pre-formed pits.
