Introduction
S32304 High Yield Strength Duplex Pipe is the lean member of the duplex family, often sold as 2304. Where 2205 and 2507 rely on 3-5% molybdenum, S32304 carries only trace molybdenum (0.05-0.60%) and depends on 21.5-24.5% chromium, 3.0-5.5% nickel and 0.05-0.20% nitrogen for its performance. That composition gives a PREN of roughly 25-26, equal to or slightly better than TP316L, but with a minimum yield strength of 400 MPa, about double the 170-205 MPa of the austenitic grade it usually replaces.
The commercial logic is cost and weight. Removing molybdenum and cutting nickel makes S32304 far less exposed to alloy surcharge swings, and the higher yield strength allows wall thickness reductions of 25-35% at the same design pressure. It also retains the chloride stress corrosion cracking resistance typical of duplex steels, so it is a sensible upgrade for hot-water, brackish and mildly chloride-bearing services where 304 or 316 would crack. It is not intended for seawater, where the low molybdenum content leaves crevice corrosion resistance short of what 2205 provides.
Pipe is supplied seamless and solution annealed at about 950-1050°C, a lower annealing window than 2205, with a 40-60% ferrite balance verified per heat. Typical uses include structural and pressure tube in water treatment plants, storage tank piping, food and beverage lines with moderate chlorides, pulp and paper white-liquor systems, and architectural or bridge hand-rail structures where strength-to-weight matters. Service is limited to about 300°C continuous, and welding follows duplex practice with 23-7-N or 22-8-3-type filler to keep the phase balance correct.

What is S32304 duplex used for?
