High Strength Duplex Stainless Tubing
ASTM A789 / A790 | UNS S32205 / S32750 | Yield Strength ≥ 450 MPa Duplex Grade
ISO 9001 | PED | TS CertifiedIntroduction
In applications where conventional austenitic stainless steel tubing reaches the boundaries of its mechanical capability, High Strength Duplex Stainless Tubing provides the engineering solution that bridges the gap between standard corrosion-resistant alloys and high-performance structural materials. Manufactured from premium duplex grades including UNS S32205, S32750, and S32760, this tubing category is defined by its exceptional yield strength — typically 450 MPa to 550 MPa depending on grade — which is approximately twice that achievable with 304L or 316L austenitic alternatives. This mechanical superiority stems directly from the balanced austenite-ferrite dual-phase microstructure that characterizes all duplex stainless steels, where the ferrite phase contributes to strength and stress corrosion cracking resistance while the austenite phase ensures adequate ductility, toughness, and fabricability. The result is a tubing material that enables engineers to design thinner-walled, lighter systems operating at higher working pressures than would be achievable with single-phase austenitic grades, delivering both structural performance and long-term corrosion resistance in a single material solution.
The mechanical advantages of high strength duplex stainless tubing are particularly compelling in structural and pressure-containing applications where weight minimization, fatigue life, and dimensional precision are simultaneously critical. In offshore platform structural tubing, the high yield strength of duplex alloys allows significant reductions in tube wall thickness, directly reducing submerged weight and the associated structural load on platform support systems. In high-pressure hydraulic and instrumentation tubing applications, the superior burst pressure capability of duplex grades compared to austenitic alternatives enables more compact system designs with reduced component counts and simplified installation. The inherent resistance of the dual-phase microstructure to fatigue crack propagation — attributable to the crack-arresting behavior at austenite-ferrite phase boundaries — further extends the operational life of tubing systems subject to cyclic pressure loading, vibration, or dynamic mechanical stress, making high strength duplex tubing the preferred material for demanding dynamic applications where long maintenance-free service intervals are a critical operational requirement.
From a corrosion engineering perspective, high strength duplex stainless tubing delivers a comprehensive protection profile that complements its mechanical performance. The elevated chromium content of 22–25%, combined with molybdenum additions of 3–4% and nitrogen enhancement, produces PREN values ranging from 34 to 42+, providing reliable protection against chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion in seawater, process cooling water, and industrial chemical environments. The ferrite-rich dual-phase structure provides inherent immunity to chloride stress corrosion cracking — the failure mechanism that most commonly compromises austenitic tubing in warm chloride-containing environments — eliminating the risk of catastrophic in-service failure that can result from the combination of residual fabrication stress and corrosive operating conditions. This dual mechanical-corrosion performance profile makes high strength duplex stainless tubing the material of choice across a wide range of demanding industries, from offshore oil and gas production and chemical processing to desalination infrastructure, structural engineering, and high-pressure fluid transport systems where uncompromising reliability is the defining specification requirement.
Our high strength duplex stainless tubing program covers a comprehensive range of dimensions, grades, and product forms to address the full diversity of structural and pressure-containing tubing requirements. Available in seamless and welded constructions, with outer diameters from 6.35mm to 610mm and wall thicknesses from 0.5mm to 30mm, all tubing is manufactured and tested in full compliance with ASTM A789, ASTM A790, EN 10216-5, and applicable structural and pressure vessel codes. Comprehensive material certifications including EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Reports are provided as standard, covering full chemical and mechanical property traceability, non-destructive test records, and dimensional inspection data. Whether your application requires the cost-effective performance of lean duplex S32304, the proven reliability of standard duplex S32205, or the maximum strength and corrosion resistance of super duplex S32750, our technical team is equipped to provide alloy selection guidance, pressure-temperature rating support, and application engineering expertise to ensure your high strength duplex tubing solution delivers the performance, reliability, and service life your most demanding projects require.

Product Usage Tips
Welding Recommendations
Use TIG welding with ER2209 filler for S32205 or ER2594 for S32750. Maintain interpass temperature below 150°C and use nitrogen-argon backing gas to preserve the dual-phase microstructure and mechanical strength in the weld zone.
Cutting & Fabrication
Plasma arc or waterjet cutting recommended. Use carbide tooling with adequate cooling for machining. Segregate all tooling from carbon steel to prevent iron contamination that compromises corrosion performance in service.
Cleaning & Passivation
Passivate with nitric or citric acid after fabrication to restore the passive film. This is especially important for high-strength applications where any surface corrosion initiation can accelerate fatigue crack growth under cyclic loading.
Temperature Considerations
Recommended service range: -50°C to 300°C. For high-strength structural applications, ensure design accounts for the slightly higher notch sensitivity of duplex grades compared to austenitic grades at sub-zero temperatures.
