Introduction
Seawater Desalination S32750 Seamless Tube is configured for the two harshest points of a desalination plant: the high-pressure side of reverse osmosis (RO), where seawater at 55-70 bar and 35,000-45,000 ppm total dissolved solids meets pipe walls, and the brine circuits of thermal MSF and MED units, where concentrated brine, elevated temperature and dissolved oxygen combine. Standard 316L fails within a year in this duty and 2205 struggles at the flange and gasket crevices, so plant designers move to super duplex with a PREN above 40.
In RO service the combination of 550 MPa yield strength and high corrosion resistance is decisive. Thin-wall tube can carry the pressure while remaining resistant to chloride pitting, keeping pump station skids smaller and lighter. In thermal plants the same alloy handles brine heater tubes and vent condenser lines, where the chloride level at the tube wall can rise well above seawater because of evaporation. Chlorination and other biocides used against biofouling are tolerated when residual chlorine is kept within normal plant limits.
Tubes are supplied seamless, solution annealed and pickled, with eddy current screening and hydrostatic testing at pressures chosen for the RO design class. Crevice control is the design point that matters most: flange faces, threaded joints and under-deposit zones should be minimized, and welded connections need full-penetration root passes with argon back purge. Where a plant operates below roughly 30°C seawater, 2205 may be enough; above that or with stagnant zones, S32750 removes the risk and often pays back through avoided outages.
