Introduction
ASTM B444 Inconel 625 Seamless Pipe is made from a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy with niobium: at least 58% nickel, 20-23% chromium, 8-10% molybdenum and 3.15-4.15% niobium. The molybdenum and niobium stiffen the lattice, so the alloy gets high strength without precipitation heat treatment, while the very high nickel, chromium and molybdenum content gives pitting resistance far above stainless steels, with a PREN well over 50. The alloy is immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking and resists both oxidizing and reducing acids.
ASTM B444 covers seamless pipe and tube in two grades. Grade 1 (annealed at a high temperature, around 1090°C or above) has a minimum tensile strength of 830 MPa, yield strength of 415 MPa and elongation of 30%; it is chosen for strength at higher service temperature. Grade 2 (solution annealed) has lower strength at 690 MPa tensile and 275 MPa yield but lower carbon (0.03% maximum), giving better fabricability and corrosion performance in welded process piping. Between about 600°C and 800°C extended exposure can precipitate brittle delta phase, so the alloy is rated for strength to about 650°C and for corrosion service well below that.
In process plants it is used for flue gas desulfurization ducts and scrubber piping, chemical reactor and transfer lines carrying hot acids with chlorides, seawater and offshore firewater and hydraulic systems, sour gas piping, pulp bleach lines and waste incinerator parts. Compared with 904L and duplex steels, 625 costs much more but extends service life in the harshest chloride and acid duties, and it is often used as clad or weld overlay for cost control. Welding uses matching ERNiCrMo-3 filler, and heat input is kept moderate to limit segregation of niobium and molybdenum.
