Hardened Martensitic Stainless Steel Pipes
ASTM A268 / A276 | TP410 / TP420 / TP431 / TP440C | Heat-Treated High Hardness Grades
ISO 9001 | PED | TS CertifiedIntroduction
Where conventional stainless steel grades reach the boundary of their mechanical capability and engineers require a pipe material that combines corrosion resistance with hardness, wear resistance, and elevated tensile strength in a single heat-treatable alloy system, Hardened Martensitic Stainless Steel Pipes deliver the engineered solution that bridges the mechanical and corrosion performance gap between tool steels and austenitic stainless grades. Encompassing the full range of hardenable chromium stainless grades — TP410, TP420, TP431, and TP440C — hardened martensitic pipes share the defining characteristic of a body-centered tetragonal crystal structure achieved through controlled austenitizing, quenching, and tempering heat treatment cycles that transform the high-temperature austenite phase into a fine-grained martensite matrix of exceptional hardness and wear resistance. The carbon content, ranging from 0.08% in TP410 to 0.95–1.20% in TP440C, is the primary lever controlling the final hardness achievable after full hardening treatment, with higher carbon grades capable of reaching 58 HRC — hardness values that overlap with dedicated tool steels — while retaining the passive chromium oxide film that distinguishes them from non-stainless alloy steels in moderately corrosive service environments.
The engineering value proposition of hardened martensitic stainless steel pipes is most clearly demonstrated in applications where abrasive wear, sliding contact erosion, and mechanical fatigue occur simultaneously in environments that preclude the use of unprotected carbon or alloy steels. In the mining and mineral processing industries, hardened martensitic pipes convey slurries of abrasive ore particles in acidic process water where the combination of impact erosion, abrasive wear, and mild acid corrosion rapidly destroys both carbon steel and standard austenitic stainless alternatives. The hardened microstructure resists the micro-cutting and micro-fatigue mechanisms of abrasive wear that erode softer pipe materials, while the passive chromium oxide film provides the chemical protection that alloy steel hardened pipes cannot offer. In valve and pump body applications, hardened TP420 or TP431 pipe stock provides the dimensional stability, hardness, and moderate corrosion resistance required for precision-machined valve seats, pump impeller wear rings, and shaft sleeves in chemical dosing and water treatment applications — components where both dimensional accuracy and surface hardness are critical to maintaining sealing performance and minimizing clearance wear over extended service intervals.
The heat treatment process for hardened martensitic stainless steel pipes requires careful engineering to achieve the target mechanical properties consistently throughout the pipe cross-section, particularly for heavy-wall and large-diameter products where through-hardening and uniform microstructure distribution are technically challenging. The austenitizing temperature must be selected within a narrow window — typically 950–1050°C depending on grade — that fully dissolves carbon into the austenite phase without excessive grain growth that would compromise toughness. Quenching in oil, forced air, or polymer solution achieves the critical cooling rate required to suppress pearlite and bainite formation, producing the martensitic microstructure in a controlled and repeatable manner. Subsequent tempering at carefully controlled temperatures determines the final balance between hardness and toughness: low-temperature tempering at 150–200°C maximizes hardness at some cost to impact toughness, while high-temperature tempering at 550–650°C sacrifices peak hardness to achieve the superior toughness required for impact-loaded applications. Our heat treatment capability, equipped with precision-controlled atmosphere furnaces and validated cooling systems, ensures that every hardened martensitic pipe shipment meets the specified mechanical properties with documented process records supporting full material traceability.
Available across a comprehensive dimensional range covering outer diameters from 10mm to 406mm with wall thicknesses from 1.5mm to 25mm, our hardened martensitic stainless steel pipes are supplied in customer-specified heat treatment conditions with full EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Report documentation covering chemical composition, hardness verification, tensile and yield strength data, impact toughness results, and heat treatment process records. Compliant with ASTM A268, ASTM A276, and EN 10216-5, the program covers all standard martensitic grades from the economical TP410 general-purpose grade through to the high-carbon TP440C maximum-hardness specification. Custom heat treatment to customer-defined hardness ranges, selective case hardening, and combination annealed-plus-partial-hardening conditions are available for specialized application requirements where the standard catalog heat treatment conditions do not precisely match the target mechanical property profile.

Applications
Advantages
Tunable Hardness Profile
Tempering temperature selection allows hardness to be precisely dialed from 200 HBW for tough impact service to 580 HBW for maximum wear resistance — in the same base grade.
Abrasion Resistance
Hardened martensitic microstructure resists micro-cutting wear from abrasive slurry particles, extending pipe service life dramatically versus standard austenitic alternatives in abrasive flow service.
Dimensional Stability
Controlled heat treatment cycles produce dimensional stability that austenitic work-hardened pipes cannot match, enabling tight-tolerance precision-machined components from pipe stock.
Multi-Grade Program
Single-source supply of TP410 through TP440C covers the complete hardness and corrosion performance spectrum, simplifying procurement for multi-grade engineering projects.

Product Usage Tips
Welding Hardened Pipe
Hardened martensitic pipes must be softened to annealed condition before welding. Preheat to 200–300°C, weld with ER309L or matching grade filler, and perform full post-weld stress relief at 650–750°C before re-hardening. Attempting to weld in the hardened condition risks hydrogen cracking and HAZ fracture.
Machining Strategy
Machine hardened martensitic pipe with CBN or ceramic inserts for grades above 45 HRC. For TP410 and TP420 below 300 HBW, sharp carbide tooling with high rake angle is effective. Rigidly support the pipe during machining to prevent vibration-induced chatter that causes surface finish degradation and accelerates tool wear.
Corrosion Limit Awareness
Even in the fully hardened condition, martensitic grades have lower corrosion resistance than austenitic or duplex grades. Avoid service in high-chloride, marine, or strongly acidic environments where passive film stability of the 12–14% Cr martensitic matrix is insufficient. Consult our technical team for service environment assessment.
Cryogenic Caution
Hardened martensitic stainless steel exhibits a ductile-to-brittle transition at sub-zero temperatures. For applications below 0°C, specify the highest available tempering temperature to maximize impact toughness, and validate Charpy V-notch impact values at the minimum design temperature before service deployment.
