Introduction
Monel 600 Oxidation Resistant Alloy Pipe is a trade-name shorthand widely used in the market for Alloy 600, formally UNS N06600 and also sold as Inconel 600. It is a nickel-chromium alloy rather than a nickel-copper Monel: at least 72% nickel with 14-17% chromium and 6-10% iron. High nickel makes the alloy immune to chloride stress corrosion cracking, and the chromium gives scale resistance, so it works in two areas where stainless steel is weak: hot oxidizing gases and hot concentrated caustic solutions.
In air the alloy resists oxidation to about 1100°C, and it keeps useful strength and ductility from cryogenic temperatures up to roughly 650°C. Seamless pipe made to ASTM B167 in the annealed condition has a minimum tensile strength of 550 MPa, yield strength of 240 MPa and elongation of 30%. It is not hardened by heat treatment, only by cold work. Carbon is held low and a stabilizing anneal is common to limit chromium carbide precipitation. Resistance to sulfur-free high-temperature gases is excellent, but sulfur-bearing atmospheres above about 315°C can cause intergranular attack and should be avoided.
Typical applications include furnace muffles and retorts, heat-treatment baskets, thermocouple sheaths, chemical process piping for hot chlorinated organics and caustic soda evaporators, and nuclear steam generator tubing in older plants. In pressurized-water nuclear service Alloy 600 showed primary water stress corrosion cracking, which led to replacement by higher-chromium Alloy 690 in newer designs, so material choice should follow the process medium. Welding uses matching nickel-chromium filler such as ERNiCr-3, and no post-weld heat treatment is normally required.
